For Americans, jeans are staple item that almost everyone has it and we wear jeans to different places at different occasions. We’re not afraid of spending $150 – $300 for a pair of jeans because we see it as an investment, especially for women from metropolitan cities. But don’t forget that these are true only for people who make decent income and who live in LA, New York, San Francisco, and other metropolitan cities. These people are only a fraction of the US population. So what happen to the rest of the Americans?

First tips: To maximize your profit, I recommend you to keep your production cost low by producing your jeans in countries like China or Vietnam. I outsourced my private label jean to China and I paid approx. $10 per jeans. That’s for a good quality jeans, not a crappy one. The benefit of producing your jeans locally is safer because you can report them to Better Business Bureau if something happens. The con is expensive. There’s a way to make your deal with foreign jeans manufacturer safer by using local jeans agent.

I used local jeans agent called Jeans By You (www.JeansByYou.com) and I live in the US. If you don’t live in the US, that won’t be a problem because my jeans agent has customers all over the world. They can speak English and Indonesian fluently. You can contact them by email, Skype, or MSN. I specialized in men and women pants and children clothing and I produce all of my private label jean in China. I don’t speak Chinese, I don’t know anyone in China, I’ve never gone to China, and I’m afraid of being scammed by Chinese manufacturers. Quite surprising huh?? I’ve been working together with Jeans By You and they act as an intermediary between the Chinese manufacturer and I. I send them my designs, photos of jeans, or an actual jeans that I want to produce, and they will get back to me with all of the information such as the cost per jeans, production time, and etc. They send me jeans sample before final production so I can check the quality of the jeans. If I like the sample jeans, then they will go ahead with the final production. If I don’t like the sample jeans, they will make changes according to my instruction. For sample jeans, I only pay the production cost (which is around $10) plus shipping cost from China to US. They accept Escrow, PayPal, Letter of Credit, and wire transfer. So far, I’ve never had any problem with them. After final production, they can arranged the shipping for extra cost. I would rather pay a little extra money to use jeans agent rather than to deal with Chinese manufacturers directly. You might think their service is costly. Surprise surprise… I paid $10 for each jeans and that’s it. No extra charge. That’s why I keep on coming back to them.

Second tips: Based on my experience, you have to have some kind of evidence to show that you’re the owner of your private label brand. Otherwise, your jeans will not pass Chinese customs and your country’s customs.

Third tips: buttons, rivets, or label with your logo/design on it is costly because the manufacturer has to make a mold for your design. Usually it costs around $150/mold. Say you have 3 different sizes (10mm, 15mm, and 20mm) of logo for your buttons, then you have to pay around $450 for 3 molds. That molds are made especially for you and cannot be used by other buyers. Luckily, that’s only a one-time charge. You don’t have to pay for the mold costs for your next orders as long as you use the same manufacturer. You only have to pay for the production cost of the jeans.

Fourth tips: Most of the time the minimum order is 100 pieces. Only few factories want to produce 50 jeans and if they do, usually you have to pay extra. The more quantity you order, the cheaper the cost per jeans. If you order 10,000 jeans or more, you don’t have to pay for the label fee (on the back above the belt loop).

But my sadness turns into a brilliant business idea. Currently, I’m in the process of creating a jeans line for pregnant women. You have the options to select the fitting, style, fabric, zipper style, and etc. Then, I’m going to produce your jeans in China because the production cost there is very cheap. Luckily, I found an agent who will handle the production process, shipping, and custom. The lady can speak English well and the company is based in California. I’ve heard a lot about scams by Chinese manufacturers. So finding a non-Chinese agent who works with various Chinese jeans manufacturers for my private label maternity denim is the answer. If you’re in private label denim business and would like to locate Chinese manufacturers to produce your design, I strongly recommend you find a non-Chinese middleman. They usually also produce the latest trend denim jeans for re-sale.  You can buy blank or plain jeans from jeans manufacturers then you can put your own brand or logo.
